Visakhapatnam: Otherwise peaceful, the city woke up to the sensational suicide of rowdy-sheeter RVS Kiran, popularly known as Podugu Kiran, in the early hours of Monday on the premises of Central Jail, where he was remanded under PD Act. According to Arilova Police, Kiran hanged from the iron bars of a window (ventilator) of the toilet using his white dhoti. The 31-year-old Kiran, a resident of posh East Point Colony area in the city, was accused in seven criminal cases under various police station limits.

Kiran got bail in Anil Kumar’s murder case and later he involved in one more case. He was attacked by his rival gang recently. Kiran was detained by invoking Section 2 (F) of AP Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act-1986, popular as PD Act on May 2, 2016 and he was sent to Central Prison on May 4, 2016 on remand and he was put in the SS Block along with three others, including one rowdy-sheeter of Ankapalle and two ganja smugglers.

The authorities of Central Prison said that Kiran hanged between 3.50 am and 4 am on Monday. Kiran was found hanging in the toilet around 4.10 am by the jail officials and he was taken to King George Hospital around at 5.15 am where the medical team declared him brought dead. Expressing doubts over the death, family members of Kiran including his wife R Ashalatha, a professor in Andhra Medical College, said that Kiran was known for his courage and would not have taken such hasty decision. She demanded a proper inquiry to punish police and jail authorities who were ‘responsible’ for the death.
