Vijayawada: Congress leaders here on Friday staged a protest against the postponement of debate on the Private Member’s Bill in the Rajya Sabha seeking Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh.

The Congress leaders accused the ruling BJP-TDP combine of playing delay tactics on the Bill. They said that the two ruling parties were not sincere to the people of the State and were not ready to fulfil their promise. The Congress leaders and activists burnt the effigy of the BJP and TDP combine accusing them of being anti-Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing the activists, former minister and the APCC vice-president Devineni Rajaskehar Nehru said that the two ruling parties have exposed their true colours on the promises given to the State at the time of bifurcation.

He recalled that the BJP leaders M Venkaiah Naidu and Arun Jaitely have promised on the floor of the Rajya Sabha to give Special Category Status for 15 years. The two parties have also repeated the same promise at their election meeting in Tirupati, he recalled.

Rajasekhar said that the private member Bill introduced by the Congress Rajya Sabha member K V P Ramachandra Rao would remain live as long as Rao continued as an MP. “They have postponed the Bill in the previous session.

This time, too, they did the same thing. They might do the same in the days to come. But they would be forced to allow the Bill for debate and go for voting. They can’t escape,” he asserted. He further alleged that both the TDP and the BJP were misleading the people on their election promises.

APCC vice-president said that BJP leader and now Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu had made tall claims on the passing of the AP Reorganisation Act 2014 and have extensively campaigned in the State as the benefits promised to the State were because of their initiative.

He said that the BJP had repeatedly promised to give Special Category Status to the State for 15 years which was also endorsed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The TDP and the BJP leaders have been blaming the Congress for not including the Special Category Status in the Reorganisation Act. Now, when the Congress is trying for its inclusion in the Act through an amendment, they are running away,” Rajasekhar Nehru said. He further added that people of the State were watching these leaders and their betrayal politics and would teach them a lesson soon.

AP Youth Congress president Devineni Avinash, APCC spokesman Kolanukonda Sivaji, Krishna district Congress president K Butchi Babu and others were present.
