Ongole: The APSRTC introduced a new charge, Passenger Information System fee, to the passengers of special type services like Express, Deluxe, Ultra Deluxe, Super Luxury, Indra, Garuda, Garuda Plus and Vennela services. The fee will now be collected even on current booking tickets. Earlier, the RTC had introduced it on advanced reservation tickets.

The RTC collects Rs 1 from every adult and child passenger on each trip as PIS fee, which would be used for alerting the passengers about the bus movement, providing information about the reservation and other services. The fee is not levied on passengers travelling in ordinary Telugu Velugu services.

Since bifurcation, the APSRTC is earning an income of Rs 4,800 crore per annum and incurring an expenditure of Rs 5,400 crore. The corporation is facing a loss of Rs 600 crore annually and is looking for options to increase the revenue. The APSRTC offers about 1.95 lakh seats on advance reservation regularly and used to earn Rs 60 lakh per month with the existing PIS fee on the reservation services. Now with the extension of the services to all non-rural services, the RTC is expected to earn Rs 1 crore per month.

The RTC introduced PIS in addition to the already existed passenger cess of Rs 2, safety cess of Rs 1 and applicable toll fee. The passenger cess goes to the Passenger Amenities Fund, which would be used to provide better facilities at the bus stations. This is also used for construction of bus shelters, approach roads, machinery, furniture and others. The collected safety cess would be used to pay to the commuters and their family members involved in accidents, as per the orders of the court.

Shaik Adam Saheb, Regional Manager of APSRTC Ongole said, “The APSRTC will provide facilities to the passengers from the funds collected as the cess. The Passenger Information System Fund would be used for the expenses incurred to send SMS, phone calls to the passenger to inform him about the bus movement. The passenger amenities fund and the safety cess are also used for the public service purposes.”
