Eluru: The West Godavari district administration has chalked out a plan to convert the present Social Welfare hostels into residential schools in the district with an outlay of Rs 67 crore and the plan has been submitted to the State government, according to district Collector K Bhaskar. Reviewing the progress of the education sector with officials on Thursday, the collector said that the number of students at residential schools was increasing and it was decided to convert the Welfare hostels into residential schools.

He said the new plan provided for the construction of an additional 383 classrooms and would provide additional seats to 12,000 students. The collector observed that Rs 30 crore was currently being spent on the maintenance of hostels in the district. The collector pointed out that the tribal hostels in the district had already been converted into residential schools and added that classrooms for the fourth standard would be taken up at a cost of Rs 30 lakh.

Regarding the BC hostels, he said that 52 classrooms would be constructed at a cost of Rs 4 crore. The Collector directed the District Educational officer to introduce English medium classes in higher secondary education in the district. He suggested that the option of studying either in English medium or Telugu medium should be left to the students.

Stating that there were 12,000 students working in the district, he said it was their responsibility to mould the students into responsible citizens. DEO D Madhusudana Rao, Deputy DEOs G Williams, J Somaraju, Tirumala Das, M Rama Rao and others participated.
