Vijayawada: Rains triggered by low pressure formed over Bay of Bengal gave a big relief to farmers of Krishna district on Monday. Farmers particularly, the paddy farmers are eagerly waiting for the rains this kharif season due to low rainfall recorded in June and July.

Paddy is the most cultivated crop in the district with cultivated area of 2.35 lakh hectares in kharif season. Paddy crop needs more water compared to other crops. Due to influence of low pressure, all mandals in Krishna district recorded rainfall for two days.

Now, lakhs of farmers are eagerly waiting for rains to raise seedbeds as well as sowing seeds.
Last year, the targeted crop area was 3.20 lakh hectares and it increased to 3.50 lakh hectares this year because of Pattiseema Lift irrigation water can be supplied to Krishna delta region. So far, monsoon is inactive in Krishna delta region in June and July.
So, the sudden rainfall due to depression in Bay of Bengal is giving a big hope to the farming community to raise nurseries and for sowing seeds. According to meteorology department the Coastal districts may witness heavy rains in the next two days. These rains will be extremely useful to the sowing of paddy crops. Paddy is the most important crop in Krishnan district with normal cultivated area of 2.35 lakh hectares.
Cotton, maize, pulses, sugarcane are other important crops in the district. Joint Director of Agriculture, Krishna district, U Narasimha Rao said the Agriculture department has arranged to supply seeds, fertilisers this kharif season and felt this rainfall will be very useful to the farmers.
With the rains recorded in Western Krishna district for the last two days, inflows into Prakasam barrage, which will supply irrigation water to 13 lakh acres in Krishna delta. M Nagireddy, YSRCP Farmers wing state president said farmers will be benefitted with the rains registered in the district. He felt if heavy rains take place, some farmers may suffer loss as seedbeds may be damaged.
