Akiveedu: The biggest Panchayat in State, Akiveedu is facing acute shortage of drinking water because of the neglect of officials and people’s representatives.
People complain that no additional overhead water tanks were constructed during the past eight years, though tap connections were provided to every house.
At present, only posh areas in the village are getting drinking water while other localities face poor supply.
In order to avoid use of motors by some people at the time of water supply, the Panchayat officials have been stopping electricity supply. In spite of this measure, water is not reaching all areas.
With a population of 45,000, the Panchayat have five overhead tanks. The number of taps has been increased to 6,500 as against 3,500 eight years ago.
The five tanks have the capacity to supply 13.4 lakh litres of water. No effort was made to increase the supply capacity by building new overhead tanks all these years.
The alum-based water treatment plant remained uncompleted. Neither filter heads nor pump wells were constructed to meet the demand for water in the biggest Panchayat.
The people have been openly criticising the authorities for lack of vision to improve water supply to suit the future needs since 2011.
The drinking water supply turns worst during summer. The residents have been digging pits to fetch groundwater as the officials failed to supply water to all.
