Visakhapatnam: The sanitation workers in the city went on a flash strike as the State government and GVMC failed to resolve their problems. With the district already reported dengue and viral fevers, the flash strike of sanitation workers may worsen the situation.

After the State government introduced GO 279 which deals with the increased control of contractors over sanitation workers, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is facing hurdles as the trade union leaders approached the court on this issue.

All trade union leaders staged a dharna demanding to scrap the GO 279 as it would affect the livelihood of outsourcing workers. Stating that the sanitation workers not having any job security, they said if the GO was implemented, the contractor would become the principal employer rather than the Municipal Commissioner concerned.

The union leaders appealed to people and parties to support their agitation. Extending support to the agitation, the CITU leaders came down heavily on the TDP government for its inefficiency in providing facilities to outsourcing employees, salary payment through GO 010, regularisation and implementation of PRC.
