Hyderabad: Many women dream of becoming an entrepreneur, but miniscule per cent of them make it a reality. The obstacles for women with an aspiration to become an entrepreneur would generally begin from the house itself.

Family members discourage first and then getting financial support is almost an impossible task for even educated women from middle-class and lower middle-class families. Now, all eyes on Global Entrepreneurship Summit - GES 2017, which will be held with a focus on women entrepreneurs.

The Summit, which is being organised annually since 2010 by the US government, this time NITI Aayog has been partnered with to host it in India in Hyderabad during November 28-30, 2017.

November 19 is celebrated as Women’s Entrepreneurship Day. With one week away from GES 2017, women entrepreneurs, who’re keen on taking up their own startup ventures, are optimistic on the global event as it’s expected spur some momentum in providing a level playing platform for them.

Sunitha, an engineering graduate, said that becoming an entrepreneur is not a cake walk for women in India. “Family background and support from husband or father or brothers is more important. Otherwise, we can say, it’s a lonely path as we have to do everything on our own. Despite all this effort, if the system (government support) doesn’t support, then we are helpless.”

The 8th edition of GES 2017 will be an attempt for the development of women entrepreneurs. The theme of GES-2017 in Hyderabad is ‘Women First, Prosperity for All,’ which highlights that when women do better, countries do better.

Melinda Gates, the co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, says: “A woman with a voice is by definition a strong woman. But, the search to find that voice can be remarkably difficult.” PM Narendra Modi will address the GES-2017 gathering during inaugural session, while the US delegation will be led by Ivanka Trump, Advisor to President Trump.

For the newbies, GES is the preeminent annual entrepreneurship gathering that convenes over one thousand emerging entrepreneurs, investors, and supporters from around the world. To date, the Summit was organised all across the world from Washington DC to Istanbul, Dubai, Marrakech, Nairobi, Kuala Lumpur, Silicon Valley, and now it’s in Hyderabad.
