Young duo Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan, who were last seen together in their debut film, ‘Student of The Year’, were at their playful best during the promotion of their upcoming film, ‘Humpty Sharma ki Dulhaniya’ in Hyderabad. The movie which will see the two pair up for the first time after their debut is a “modern day love story” according to the two. Sharing insights about the film, which has been produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, Varun Dhawan says, “This film is not a typical love story and my character, Humpty, is not the usual Hindi film hero. People talk about actors kissing multiple times in a single film. But this movie will be totally different! Here, Alia slaps me 22 times!”
Agreeing to it, Alia says, “Yes, I did! The character I play in the film, Kavya, is a pataka. She is angry and moody; you can call her a female version of Sunny Deol from ‘Gadar’.” Varun nods in agreement and states that it is the ‘massiest’ character that Alia has played till now. “All the herogiri you’ll see in the film will be by her! Not me.”
Both the actors, interestingly, have a Hyderabadi connection, though this is the first film they are promoting here. “As a kid, I used to accompany my father, who would shoot at Ramoji Film City. You know those Govinda and Karishma movies? I never thought I would come here to promote my film one day. But then I am finally here!”
He adds, “I also have friends here, belonging to the south cinema. I know Ileana since ‘Main Tera Hero’ and Hansika – who I would say is my favourite actress down south – is a childhood friend.”
Alia, however, has a different tale to tell, “I have a very close friend from city and she keeps talking about NTR. She actually thinks I should date him!” Varun interrupts as he asks, “Isn’t he married?” Alia replies laughing, “I know! And so we should probably keep that bit to ourselves.”
So is the actress going to be seen in Telugu cinema anytime soon? “Though nothing has been finalised, I would like to work with NTR! I haven’t watched his movies. But my friend talks a lot about him. Also there’s Surender Reddy. His movies are good.” Varun adds, “She should work with the director of ‘Pokiri’. What’s his name? He is legendary!”
Alia has been tagged the ‘female Emraan Hashmi’ in recent times. So does she take it as a compliment? “Not really. I have done only four films till now out of which there is no kiss in only one film. So it would be unjust to say that. To call me a serial kisser, I should have kissed in at least 10 films, no? Though I am stunned that there is a talk as such, I think I wouldn’t mind because Emraan Hashmi’s movies and songs are hits! I wish the same for all my films too.”
Varun on the other hand seems to be ready with another Telugu film’s remake? ‘Race Gurram’ is the name that has been doing the rounds for sometime. Varun dispels the talk saying, “It’s too early to say anything. I have watched the movie and I found it to be awesome. I might be doing some Telugu remake. But nothing is final yet.”
Varun and Alia will be seen as Punjabis in the film and share a fantastic chemistry, which was palpable in the press meet.
