Even though,45-odd Kannadiga groups are seeking a ban on release of the magnum opus in Karnataka region and forced actor Satyaraj to apologise to the people of Karnataka to allow the release of the film on April 28, but industry sources revealed that until the financial dispute between Kannada and Telugu distributor is resolved, the fate of the release would continue to hang in the balance.

At the crux of the issue is a dispute related to the collections of ‘Baahubali 1’ in Karnataka and industry bigwigs are holding negotiations to resolve the same. A leading distributor discloses the details on Karnataka rebellion. “Actually, the Telugu distributor gave the distribution rights of ‘Baahubali 1’ to a Kannada distributor on the agreement that the latter would return the excess amount collected beyond Rs 14 crore.

Even though, the epic fantasy collected more than Rs 25 crore in 2015, the Kannada distributor was fudging figures and trying to avoid doling out Rs 12 crore to the Telugu distributor which ruffled members of both sides,” he says. Just a week or two ago, the dispute took an ugly turn as the Kannada distributor who was in Hyderabad was reportedly threatened by goons to repay the amount.

Angered by the rough treatment meted out to him, the Kannada distributor met up with his friends and NGO’s in Karnataka and allegedly raked up the Cauvery row to somehow the stall the release of ‘Baahubali 2’ since the sequel was bought by the same Telugu distributor. “Tempers have cooled down but industry bigwigs are holding negotiations with the warring parties to ensure a smooth release of much-awaited epic fantasy,” he concludes.
