Hyderabad: The Uppal police on Thursday arrested Sachin Uppal and his friend Kotagiri Rakesh Kumar, on charges of murdering Reetu Uppal alias Reetu Sareen, 29, a former air hostess at their Ramanthapur house in Uppal on April 19. “The woman was smothered to death with a pillow by her husband Sachin after a heated spat.

On April 19 at around 8.30 pm, Sachin and Rakesh, 29, working with Infosys and a resident of Safilguda came at former’s house after having liquor and a heated argument ensued between the couple which took a nasty turn when Sachin hit her she fell and in the process her head banged on the floor. Reetu immediately went inside the bedroom writhing in pain and argued that she would inform her parents.

At the time of the incident, Rakesh was sitting in the hall and watching TV, but did not bother to stop Sachin,” ACP (Malkajagiri) M Ravichandran Reddy said, explaining the turn of events. The ACP added that Sachin got agitated as his wife was constantly screaming. “He went inside the bedroom, took a pillow and smothered Reetu to death by placing it on her face around 10.45 pm.

Thereafter, he called his in-laws and told them that she was unwell. By the time her parents came and shifted her to hospital, she died,” Reddy said, adding that Sachin suspected Reetu was betraying him and forced her to quit Jet Airways job. He continued to harass her for more dowry, Rs 10 lakh, to meet his business expenses. “About 10 days back, Reetu’s mother Ujjala Sareen had an argument with Sachin over the disposal of their house at Jamshedpur in Jharkhand state,” the official said.

Police registered a case under Sections 302, 304-B, 498-A, 202, 203 of the IPC and Section 3, 4 & 6 of Dowry Prohibition Act against Sachin and Rakesh and arrested them from Sachin parents’ house at Himayathnagar and brought to police station where he confessed his guilt.
