Oh my word Inter, Intern, Interne Interned, Interred Interment, internment

Interned means imprisoned. But what does it mean when one says, “I interned at the office of the United Nations at Vienna in Austria”? Interned also means undergoing supervised training to gain experience in the chosen field or profession. Inter means to bury someone in a grave or tomb; interred is burying someone. Interment is the process of burying the dead body. Interred means buried.

Note: inter also means between; from one to another. Some examples are international, interface, interlink and interconnect. Whether to bury or burn a dead body varies from community to community. Muslims and Christians inter dead bodies (bury) but Hindus burn them instead. Many societies have established several practices for interment.

Intern is a verb meaning putting somebody in prison, in a camp during a war. It could also mean law-enforcement authorities or agencies putting someone in prison. When someone is interned, it is usually without a trial. The other derivatives of intern are interns, interning and interned. Internment is the place where someone is interned or imprisoned without a trial.

During the British colonial times Cellular Jail in Port Blair was the internment camp. Today it is a museum and memorial. The Japanese interned many British soldiers in the Malay Peninsula during the Second World War (1939-1945). Internee is a person who is interned (imprisoned). Intern has another meaning. In this sense it is also spelt as interne: Interne is a trainee, probationer or student who is paid. Interne is also a young doctor undergoing his training in a hospital as an assistant physician or surgeon. Many actors do not mind interning at studios. Many politicians intern under seniors.
