The 150-year-old Surabhi (Sri Venkateswara Natya Mandali) theatre group is renowned for its unique style combining live acts and extravagant sets with popular drama. The theatre group is a valuable part of our culture. The five Surabhi families spread across the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh came together to present the festival with the best of their plays lined up to be staged every day evening for enthusiastic audience.

A scene from ‘Srinivasa Kalyanam’

The first day saw a play based on the iconic play ‘Mayabazaar’. The film which still boasts of being one of the best movies to have special effects in history of Indian cinema was portrayed in the form of a play in front of live audience. The troupe left no stone unturned to bring the same kind of charisma and special effects which movie had.

‘Srinivasa Kalyanam’ was showcased on the second day. The packed house was mesmerised with endearing performances of the cast ranging from a child to an adult. The fascinating story behind the marriage of Lord Sri Venkateswara which was triggered because Mahalakshmi leaves ‘Vaikuntam’ angry with the behaviour of Sage Brigu, was portrayed splendidly by Surabhi group with all live effects intact. The audience thoroughly enjoyed as with each act, the sound of claps was renting the air. The much sought after play by the group ‘Mayabazaar’ will be showcased again on Saturday, Ugadi. The festival will conclude on March 30.
