SP Road: A first-of-its-kind, Tharuni Swetcha, two-wheeler training session was inaugurated by J Pandurang Naik, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) at the Wesley Degree & P G College premises here on Friday.

Empowering women to become confident on roads, ‘Bikernis’, an all women motorcycling club in Hyderabad in collaboration with Tharuni, technical partner of Bharosa (a City Police initiative), is conducting the two-month session.

While personnel of the Traffic Police Department and the SHE TEAMS have extended their support in training the participants, Honda Motors is facilitating the girls to learn riding on their company vehicles. A special guidance on how to respond in emergency situations would be given by faculty from the Apollo Hospitals.

“By teaching a young girl or woman to ride a bike we expose her to another way of living her life. It will not just liberate a woman but also make her independent in taking her own decisions,” said Dr Mamatha Raghuveer Achanta, founder of Tharuni.

Jaya Bharthi and Shilpa Balakrishnan who have set examples of strong endurance by journeying hundreds of miles on their Harley Davidson and Royal Enfield would act as mentors for the enthusiasts participating in the sessions.

Dr Sreenivas Puppala, District Transport Officer and Marri Laxman Reddy, chairman of MLRIT Educational Institutions participated in the inaugural event.
