Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley lightened up the discussion on Italian marines issue when he invoked the famous quote of one of the legendary characters created by Ian Fleming, James Bond in the 1964 thriller Goldfinger: "Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times, it's enemy action." The Italian action, he remarked, must be treated in the category of an enemy action. Jaitley went on, "Therefore, sir, a time has come, since we have been treated in this manner for the third time, I think, when we should forget diplomatic niceties." The BJP is harping on the Italian Connection, in an undisguised bid to hit out at Congress president Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin. The BJP leaders point to Italian businessman linked to Bofors gun deal Ottavio Quattarocchi, absconded from India through Malaysia and Argentina, getting a refuge there; the Augusta Westland VVIP helicopters deal where officials go to Italy, but come back empty-handed because no evidence is made available; and now the Italian marines. Since this is the third time, it is enemy action and the government must act, is the message.
