Harrowing times for students of SC, BC hostels

Even three months after the education year began the students have yet to receive the cosmetic bills, uniform and other facilities. The case in point is the social welfare hostels for SC and BC students situated in the outskirts of Tandur.
No snacks in evening, egg once a week only

Tandur (Rangareddy): Students of social welfare hostels for the Scheduled Castes and Backward Class have been experiencing harrowing times of late. Even three months after the education year began the students have yet to receive the cosmetic bills, uniform and other facilities. The case in point is the social welfare hostels for SC and BC students situated in the outskirts of Tandur.
Less said better about the food being served to the students. They are being given egg and fruits only once a week which is contrary the stipulated menu. The students are supposed to be served snacks of rice flakes and biscuits every evening. But they are not served forcing them to buy from street vendors.
After the lunch, the students have to wait till they are served dinner late in the night. Students who have some pocket money could purchase some snacks in the evening from street vendors. “The rest of them are starving,” the students lament.
The students have yet to receive the mandatory two pairs of uniform. When asked the wardens say they too do not know when the uniforms for the students would be supplied. Even the hair cutting bills have been paid to only a section of students. Those who have voice to demand are only getting the bills.
The officials get angry with the students if questioned about the menu, the students lament. “We don’t know whom to talk about our problems,” they say. As per records, there are 120 students in the BC hostel. In fact, there are only 50 in the hostel. Surprisingly, the attendance register also shows that there are 120 students in the hostel.
A task force committee is in place for visiting the social welfare hostels from time to time, but the committee seldom visits the hostels.
SC hostel warden Govind says that the situation has improved to some extent after he has taken charge. He points out that he is a trainee warden only. BC hostel warden Lalappa says that good food is being provided to all the students in the hostel as per the menu. They are also served snacks. The uniforms would be supplied in a week, he says. Lalappa said that he was yet to receive funds from the government to pay for the hair cutting bills. However, he evaded to answer to the question regarding the medical camps to be conducted every month.
