Bangalore: The stock of Mahendra Singh Dhoni nosedived for the worse on Sunday when he was removed as captain by IPL’s newest franchise Rising Pune Supergiants.

He will be replaced by Australian skipper Steve Smith, who is in India for their tour, for the tenth season of IPL. This comes close on the heels of Dhoni resigning as the Indian ODI team captain.

"I have the highest regard for MS Dhoni as a leader and a person. Dhoni will continue to be an important part of our team. He is supportive of the decision keeping the franchise's best interests in mind," Rising Pune Supergiants owner Sanjiv Goenka said in a media release.

"Dhoni has not stepped down. We have appointed Steve Smith as the skipper for the upcoming season. Frankly speaking, we did not have a good last season and we wanted someone young to lead the side and revamp it ahead of the upcoming season 10," Goenka was quoted as saying.

The Pune-based side had a forgettable outing in its debut season last year. Under Dhoni, they won five of 14 matches and finished seventh just above Kings XI Punjab. Overall, Dhoni has played in 143 IPL matches, scoring 3271 runs at an average of 39.40 and a strike rate of 138.95.
