Farmers evince interest in greenhouse farming, Farmers in the district are showing interest in greenhouse farming as they can grow vegetables and flowers throughout the year.

Mahabubnagar: Farmers in the district are showing interest in greenhouse farming as they can grow vegetables and flowers throughout the year. Besides, farmers can export flowers raised in a greenhouse.

Some of them raised vegetables and flowers in 30 to 40 acres through greenhouse farming in the previous year. They are keen to grow vegetables and flowers in 200 to 300 acres this year through greenhouse cultivation.

Main reason for farmers to incline towards greenhouse cultivation was the Telangana government’s announcement of extending 75 per cent subsidy for those farmers who are willing to take up greenhouse farming. Farmers have to bear the remaining 25 per cent. In the district, farmers are depending on rains and power to cultivate crops except those who are having lands near Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers. They are unable to clear huge debts incurred on crops as they are not getting support price for their produce.

The state government’s subsidy for greenhouse farming gave boost to farmers. As per the scheme, subsidy is applicable for those greenhouses which are constructed within the radius of 100 km from Hyderabad. Assembly constituencies like Shadnagar, Jadcherla, Kalwakurthy and Mahabubnagar fall within the radius of 100 km from Hyderabad.

Construction of greenhouses has become cheaper now compared to the past. At present, a farmer incurs Rs 33 lakh to construct a greenhouse in one acre of land. The state government would pay Rs 25 lakh as subsidy amount and remaining Rs 8 lakh has to be borne by the farmer.

P Somi Reddy, Assistant Director of Horticulture, said that farmers are enthusiastic to set up greenhouses with the subsidy provided by the state government. He stated that the government has set a target of constructing greenhouses in 1000 acres in four districts of Nalgonda, Medak, Ranga Reddy and Mahabubnagar.

Even though majority of farmers are showing interest on greenhouse cultivation, only the financially well-to-do farmers can afford to pay their share of subsidy towards construction of greenhouses.
