Khammam: For the past several decades, both the Central and State governments were showing discrimination against the tribals and subjugating their rights, said Tribal Students Federation (TSF) State convenor M Shoban Nayak. A rally was organised by the TSF on the occasion of the ‘World Tribal Day' here from the pavilion grounds to Yallandu crossroads in the town on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Shoban Nayak said, “Even after getting recognition and permission by the United Nations Organisation to celebrate August 9 as the “World Tribal Day”, the State and Central governments are not interested in holding the celebrations to mark the occasion.”

The tribal community has a unique culture and tradition. Both the governments have systematically took away the basic rights of the tribal people like the right to take decisions, right against exploitation, rights on the natural forest resources, right to protect their language, culture and tradition, he alleged.

Telagana Girjana Sangham District Secretary Gugulothu Dharma lamented that the tribals were put to loss due to privatisation, globalisation and liberalisation. The tribals were being forcibly driven out of their forest areas and lakhs of acres of land which belonged to them were being misused, he added.

He said that projects were constructed and mining was done in tribal areas in the name of development. But this resulted in the loss of lands which belonged to lakhs of tribal people. He wondered as to why the funds, which were allotted under the ST Sub-Plan, were diverted for other purposes.

He criticised the State government for not taking steps to setup a tribal university. Participating in the event, several speakers demanded the Central and State governments to take steps for the protection of their rights and fulfill the basic needs of many tribal people who were totally dependent on Nature.

District TSF convenor B Srikanth, Co-convenor G Hathi Ram, Tejavoth Gandhi, B Sathish, K Lakshman, G Suresh, G Saritha, B Haritha, L Sumalatha, Chandu Nayak, Lal Kumar, Raju Nayak were present along with others.
