Hyderabad: Telangana State Assembly on Tuesday witnessed a verbal duel between IT and Panchayat Raj Minister KT Rama Rao and AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi over ‘sweeping remarks’ made by the latter against the Telangana government on the spate of farmers’ suicides in the last 15 months in the State.

Akbaruddin alleged that the members of Treasury benches instead of taking the farmers’ suicides as a serious issue, were engaged in laughing and murmuring in the House when the House was debating seriously on the plights of farmers. The government claimed that Telangana was a surplus State and the second after Gujarat in the country.

He also questioned the government for not implementing loan waiver scheme as one time settlement. What made the government implement the loan waiver scheme in a phased manner when former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy implemented it at one go, he asked. He also objected to Rama Rao’s comment that the government should be questioned on farmers suicides only after five years.

Reacting to it, the IT Minister said the government had no objection if the MIM leader wanted to play to the gallery. The government would not tolerate deviation of facts on farming crisis and suicides in the debate on agricultural crisis, he said and added, “If you give respect, we will respect you or else, we also retort in the same manner.”

The Minister said the government, like others, was serious on suicides. Casting aspersions on the Treasury benches was not acceptable in the august House. The government was also committed to waive the loans at one go and extend Rs 6 lakh ex-gratia to the families of the farmers who committed suicides. “Jo Bolna hai seedha bolo, ghuma ke bolne ki zaroorat nahi hai,” he said.

In retaliation, the MIM leader asked Rama Rao to explain where he spoke “teda.” He said he always spoke straight. “I do a lot of homework before coming to the House,” he said. He also took strong objection to the Minister’s comments that he was playing to the galleries.
