Hyderabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly opposed the MS Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations on agricultural prices.

The National Commission on Farmers led by this reputed agricultural scientist recommended minimum support price (MSP) to be 50 percent over and above the cost of production. It means if the cost of production of an agricultural commodity is estimated at Rs 100 per quintal, the MSP should be at least Rs 150. There has been a nationwide demand to implement the commission’s recommendations.

The BJP while in opposition also made a similar demand. But, now BJP leader N Venugopal Reddy participating in a live discussion on HMTV categorically described the Swaminathan commission’s recommendations as unrealistic. No government can implement it, he argued.

The state government estimated the cost of production of cotton to be Rs 5,100 and recommended to the Centre to fix the MSP at Rs 7,700 .The central government announced a MSP for Rs 4,100 only much below the cost of production.

Amidst criticism on the Centre for this, the BJP representative dismissed the commission’s recommendation as faulty and cannot be implemented by any government. While the falling prices of cotton has become an election issue in Warangal this statement by BJP leader from the same district is expected to kick off a political storm on the eve of the elections.

Participating in the same discussion, the TDP representative Chandu Sambasiva Rao, however, disagreed with the BJP leader’s opinion.
