Hyderabad: To improve the literacy among students belonging to migrant families, the Telangana State government is mulling starting day schools in the State.

It may be mentioned here that literacy rate in the State is at 66.36 which is less than national average which stands at 73 per cent. It has been found that the literacy among the children of those who keep going from one place to another in the State is low.

Mahbubnagar and Medak districts account for major chunk of migrant families. Nearly 50,000 students are forced to move from one place to another every year.

Now, the government in an attempt to increase literacy among the children of migrant families is planning to establish day schools in the State.

The schools will not only impart education but also provide sumptuous nutritious snacks and three meals daily for children.

A senior official of Directorate of School Education said the Gujarat government has similar kind of programme in their State. “The proposal is on to establish day schools. These schools will come up in almost all the districts where there is floating population,” official added. The official said the directorate would write a letter to the central government to allocate necessary funds to the State under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan to establish these schools.
