Adilabad: Sudden showers and hailstorm surprised the denizens of the town here on Friday but poured water on the hopes of farmers who are getting ready to sell their crops. The red gram crop, which has been brought by the farmers to the market yard, was drenched in rain and even some portions of the heaps were washed away.

Batti Savargam, a farmer, lamented that the officials neglected their pleading for tarpaulins to protect their crop from rain. The ready-to-sell crop was lost due to absence of tarpaulins. Narayana, a farmer from Kanjarla, who brought four quintals of red gram, had lost two quintals due to the rain. The farmers tried to collect the grains, floating in the rain water. Farmers said that as many as 3,000 quintals of red gram got drenched in the water.

They alleged that officials of the market yard did not care to procure the produce even though it was brought three days before. They are demanding that the drenched crop should also be procured at the rate of Rs 8000 per kg.
