Khammam: Electioneering reached a frenzied climax on Saturday with the major contenders ruling TRS, Congress and CPI (M) putting in all resources possible to make an impact on the voters in the Palair constituency, which goes to poll on Monday.

Never before in the past Palair constituency has seen such a din as was in this election with a large number of ministers, former ministers and legislators converging at Khammam to campaign for their candidates.

Form the very outset, the by-poll campaign appeared more like a blame game as all major political parties preferred to engage in mudslinging against the others rather than focusing on the issues faced by the people.

With the TRS think-tank specifically appointing IT Minister KT Rama Rao for the Palair mission, campaign rallies of all parties gained in strength as electioneering entered the final phase.

With the TPCC working president Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka being a local, the onus fell on him to spearhead the campaign, albeit a host of other leaders, including the deputy floor leader in the Council Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy, TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy and CLP leader K Jana Reddy, taking part in the electioneering.

For the CPM’s candidate Pothineni Sudarshan Rao it was that party’s state secretary Tammineni Veerabhadram, CPI’s Puvvada Nageswar Rao and others. While the TRS’ poll plank was development, the opposition parties targeted the poll promises of the ruling party such as three acre land to Dalits and double bedroom houses.

This apart, the Congress tried to drive home a point highlighting the ruling party’s move to field Tummala Nageshwar Rao for the by-poll instead of leaving the seat unopposed to Sucharitha, the widow of sitting MLA Ramreddy Venkat Reddy.

It sparked a wordy duel between the Congress and the TRS with the latter raising Razab Ali’s instance. The TRS played down the Congress’ demand pointing out the former CPI MLA Razab Ali’s instance. It may be mentioned here that Ramreddy Venkat Reddy contested in the by-election of Sujathanagar constituency when Razab Ali died, a few decades ago.

This apart, Uttam called KTR as a bachha while refusing to accept the latter’s challenge to resign from TPCC post if the Congress nominee is defeated in Palair. Jibing back at Uttam, KTR said if he is a bachha then AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi is also a bachha.

On the other hand, the Left party leaders, while taking a dig at both the TRS and the Congress, campaigned that they alone can develop the constituency. Meanwhile, the district election officer and collector Dana Kishore ordered all politicians and supporters who were not contesting or voting to stay away from the constituency as per the Poll Code. The result of the by-poll will be declared on May 19.
