Hyderabad: Non-availability of burial land is resulting in severe hardships to the 60,000-odd Christian Protestant population in the city as they are forced to travel to neighbouring districts like Medak, Zaheerabad and Mahbubnagar to bury the deceased. The only available graveyard, the Narayanaguda cemetery is already full. The cemetery spread across four acres was partitioned equally between two Christian groups leaving the Protestants with two acres for their use.

  • The existing cemetery at Narayanaguda is full and charging exorbitant rates from members
  • Community demands implementation of GO 715
  • Communities asked to purchase land as no land available with government

“Members of our community are forced to travel long distances to bury the departed as the Narayanaguda cemetery cannot accommodate any more bodies. There is a dire need for another graveyard,” said Telangana Christusena President Nagalla Pochaiah. Though the Narayanaguda cemetery has no space left, it is somehow managing by burying three-four dead bodies at a single place and that too by charging higher prices. “Members have to pay Rs 45,000 to Rs 50,000 to bury a person at the Narayanaguda cemetery,” said M Samuel, a bishop from Medak.

Protestants have demanding the allotment of land since 2012, asking the district administration to implement the ‘government order MS 715’ dated July 2009, which gives power to the district officials to use The Land Acquisition Act and provide burial lands to needy communities. “The district administration has been given powers to enforce the GO and to provide sufficient lands to the needy, but they are reluctant to implement it,” said Pochaiah. Hyderabad District Revenue Officer V Ashok Kumar said that there was no government land available in the district for burial grounds.

“We have asked them to approach the Rangareddy district Collectorate,” he said. Hyderabad district has been receiving several requests from different communities for allotment of burial grounds. Strangely, the administration has been giving a similar reply to all petitioners, which is to buy land. “We are asking communities to buy land instead of forwarding a request to us,” said Ashok Kumar.
