Hyderabad: The GPS-enabled bus tracking system started by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has turned out to be a futile exercise as the GPS system is not functioning in the buses.

The TSRTC had started an ambitious process of providing information to the passengers about the approaching bus stations/bus stops through speakers and display boards inside the buses.

The passengers can even know the exact timing of the bus that would arrive at a particular station and actual position of the moving bus through SMS with the help of GPS technology called the Vehicle Tracking and Passenger Information System (VT&PIS).

But due to lack of proper supervision, the system had become non-operational. The idea was to provide information to the passengers inside the bus about next station, exact time of arrival of the station/bus stop with the help of LED/LCD screens in the buses and also in audio mode in three languages.

The VT&PIS is supported by the Ministry of Surface Transport and Highways with a funding of Rs 18 crore. The corporation wanted to introduce GPS technology in about 3,500 buses in the initial phase and later extend it to all the 10,000 odd buses of the corporation.

Sources said that the corporation introduced VT&PIS system in 1,600 city buses in Hyderabad, which were procured under JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission). The Rs 130 crore worth project was taken up for providing information to the passengers with the central assistance.

However, sources said that the system was not functioning in the buses now. “Initially announcements about next stop and other information used to come through the speakers but now they are not working and the display boards too are not showing the related information,” said K Nagaraju, conductor of a bus that had VT&PIS. Sources said that lack of supervision from the higher level was also one of the reasons for the system not working properly.

When asked, TSRTC MD G V Ramana Rao said that he would look into the matter. He said there were officers to monitor the functioning of the system. Rao further said that the Centre had released Rs 10 crore for the system in the beginning.

However, it did not release further money for installing the systems on other buses. He said that the idea was to first install the system in all the city buses and later in district buses.
