Adilabad: In a bid to instil a sense of security among the denizens plying in auto-rickshaws in Adilabad district, and to keep a tab on crime involving auto drivers, the police, besides issuing identity cards to chauffeurs, have taken up the task of embedding the details of autos and auto drivers online which can be accessible by all the police stations in Telangana.

Thanks to the Superintendent of Police Vikram Jeet Duggal for conceptualising the programme. The initiative comes in the wake of quite a few crimes involving auto drivers against those accessing their autos in the district.

Though the programme appears to be largely aimed at turning travelling in auto-rickshaws a safe haven for the commuters, the SP has also incorporated a few provisions safeguarding the interests of the auto drivers as well.

All the drivers and auto owners enrolled in the online database of the district police will get individual insurance benefit to the tune of Rs 2 lakh in case of death and Rs 1 lakh compensation in case of disability due to the accident.

All that the drivers have to do is to pay a premium of Rs 100 per year. The police have integrated the basic information of the auto drivers and auto owners, including their photographs, licence, vehicle registration and the details of stand to which auto-rickshaw belongs, online.

The data can be accessed by the police across the State. The initiative may come in handy for the police in crime investigation, monitoring and regulating the autos.

The SP, who travelled in an auto-rickshaw on Saturday in a bid to enthuse the auto drivers, later, issued identity cards to drivers.

This apart, laminated card displaying all the relevant information of the auto and its driver were fixed behind the driver’s seat. The card also contained emergency numbers of police control room and local police stations.

“This will definitely create a sense of discipline among the drivers,” the SP asserted, stating that it would also ensure confidence of secure travelling among the people.

Cases of reckless driving and traffic violations were also expected to come down with the drivers realising that commuters can identify them and lodge complaints with the police, he added.
