Hyderabad: Former Director General of Police (DGP) G Dinesh Reddy on Saturday denied any link with Maoist-turned-gangster Nayeem who was killed in an encounter recently.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Reddy said during his tenure as the State police chief, he had asked the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to nab Nayeem but it could not be done as the then political bosses did not allow the department to do so.

Appreciating the decision of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to give instructions to the police to nab Nayeem, the former DGP said he would meet the CM and pass on whatever sensitive information he had about Nayeem.

Replying to a spate of questions, Dinesh Reddy claimed that he had never seen Nayeem but still a section of the media was trying to drag his name into the case.

He demanded that the media expose the names of DGPs who were being alleged to have maintained good rapport with Nayeem.

The media cannot damage the image of DGPs without any basis. He said the DGPs had never handled informers and that such people had never been used for personal benefit. Former Naxalites were used as informers at the most at the level of DIGs, he said.

Replying to another question, he said he had seen Nayeem only on TV after he was shot dead in an encounter. “I just watched the TV to see the ‘joker’, who has been encountered by the police,” he added.

Dinesh Reddy further demanded that the State government probe the case in all directions and take stringent action against all those who were involved with Nayeem. At the same time, he said, the SIT should ensure that the innocent were not harassed in the name of investigation.

When questioned about the allegations that he had helped Nayeem during the fatal attack on IPS officer K S Vyas, Dinesh Reddy denied the allegations and said he was good 400 metres away from Vyas at the time of shooting.

Meanwhile, the BJP sources said the high command denied permission for Dinesh Reddy to hold the press conference in the party office.
