Hyderabad: The Telangana government is all set to draft an all-encompassing sports policy that is endeavoured to produce many more international champions cutting across various disciplines.

This categorical announcement came from IT Minister K T Rama Rao after felicitating the new hope of the nation, PV Sindhu, on her arrival from the historic women singles silver at the Rio Olympics.

The coach for all occasions, Pullela Gopichand also came in for rich tributes for the manner he churns out champion materials from his stables.

Amid thunderous applause that reverberated in GMC Balayogi Stadium here on Monday, Rama Rao said that the Pride of Telangana was the toast of the nation following her phenomenal showing in the 2016 edition of the Summer Olympics.

Rama Rao, who is also the President of the Telangana State Badminton Association, said that it was imperative that the State puts in place a vibrantly comprehensive policy that can help build the next generation of Olympians.

Extolling PV Ramana and Vijaya to feel proud that their daughter was now the daughter of India, the Minister said that he proposes to meet Sindhu’s mentor Gopichand, and Arjuna awardees from the State before finalising the sports policy.

Rama Rao said that the government was not averse to hiring foreign coaches if Gopichand felt the need for such an arrangement.

This, in a way, helped check a possible outrage following an off-the-cuff remark made earlier by Deputy Chief Minister Mahmood Ali, who, in his over-enthusiasm, stated that an overseas coach could help translate Sindhu’s dream of an Olympic gold.

Later, the famous guru-pupil duo met Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao at his Camp Office. Rao congratulated the two and wished that they will earn more such laurels in the future. He also presented cheques for Rs 1 crore and Rs 5 crore to Gopichand and Sindhu in the presence of the shuttler’s parents.

The two, along with Kidambi Srikanth, also called on Governor ESL Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan later in the evening. The first citizen said that Sindhu was the perfect role-model for future generation of players.

He felicitated the two players and gave a cheque for Rs 2 lakh to Gopichand towards development of his Academy, which now has two centres in the city.
