Karimnagar: The State government, which has been facing severe criticism for its failure in the upkeep of the Sriramsagar Project (SRSP) Kakatiya Canal that breached at Manala village in Mallial mandal five days back, suffered another blow with the under-construction weir of the Mid Manair Dam (MMD) caving in following huge inflows into the reservoir.

With the MMD receiving huge inflows from the upstream areas – Upper Manair, Moolavagu, Narmala and Konaraopet – and the floodwater released from the SRSP through the Flood Flow Canal, the flood level crossed the spillway and the bund since Sunday morning, thus creating a precarious situation for the residents of nearby villages. The overflowing water not only formed gorges at many places, but also eroded the earthen bund.

As a precautionary measure, the administration sought the services of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). A helicopter has also been kept on standby in Hyderabad to deal with any exigency, it is learnt. Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao, Finance Minister E Rajender and Collector Neetu Prasad, who inspected the dam, asserted that the administration was prepared to face any exigency.

However, residents refused to vacate Manvada village accusing the authorities of not paying compensation. Officials managed to convince them. Authorities set up a relief camp at Venkatraopalle village for the evacuees. Stating that government was monitoring the flood situation carefully, Harish Rao said that inflows received by the MMD will be diverted to the Lower Manair Dam (LMD) to ease the situation in the region.

The Kakatiya Canal D-56 which developed a breach has inundated Manala, Myadampalli and Suddala villages causing a heavy loss to the standing crops in hundreds of acres, besides forcing the administration to relocate about 200 families in a temporary relief camp. Meanwhile, the vehicular traffic between Karimnagar and Sircilla has been disrupted and it was diverted through Gangadhara due to overflowing of Moolavagu.

In a related development, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Sunday directed officials to be alert and shift people staying in low-lying areas to safer places following the flood level in the Godavari going up suddenly. He reviewed from the morning the flood situation and the safety steps being taken with Harish Rao and Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma. Rao explained the steps being taken by the district administration.
