Hyderabad: The Forest College and Research Institute (FCRI) is all set to start multidisciplinary courses in Forest Education and introduce research programmes from next academic year.

According to FCRI sources, the State Forest Department (SFD) had represented to the government soon after the formation of Telangana that the State needs a professional forest education and research institute on the lines of ones established in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Following this, permission was granted and a 4-year undergraduate course in B.Sc forestry was launched from 2016-17.

The FCRI follows integrated curricula recommended by the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) and the Indian Council of Forestry Research Education (ICFRE). This enables the students pursuing the courses to get acquainted with biological, environmental, social and management sciences and forest survey engineering. The courses are intended to shape the students to give the global climatic change perspective on the forests.

Speaking to The Hans India, senior official of the FCRI said that the main objective was to give exposure to fundamental principles of multiple use forestry and ecosystem management.

The 4-year courses are conducted so far with lecturers taken on contract basis and will have a permanent faculty of assistant and associate professors and professors and other administrative staff. FCRI Deputy Director K Srinivas said that the State government gave its approval for the recruitment of permanent faculty in June, 2017, for which, the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) notified the vacancies in July. The recruitment process would start from September and new faculty is expected to be appointed within a couple of months. This would help the FCRI to start the post graduate and research programmes, he added.

FCRI has also chalked out plans to associate with reputed institutions in forest education from within the country and abroad, to give value addition to the courses and research programmes of the institute.
