Jagtial: People’s representatives have to play a bigger role to achieve 100 per cent individual sanitary latrines (ISLs) for all the households, senior Congress leader and Jagtial MLA T Jeevan Reddy said.

Speaking at an awareness programme by the district administration here on Wednesday, Jeevan Reddy deplored the people’s lukewarm response to the government’s campaign to construct ISLs.

“Despite the financial assistance provided by the government, people are not coming forward to construct the ISLs.

Hence, the onus is on local people’s representatives to create awareness about the importance of having ISLs,” Reddy said.

District Collector A Sharath said that along with people’s representatives, the responsibility also lies on officials to take the message to the grassroots.

“Even a poor State like Chhattisgarh has achieved 100 per cent ISLs, but people in the region are not mending their ways citing reasons like lack of place, vastu and finances,” the Collector said.

He reminded that Himachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh States have been imposing fine on those who failed to construct ISLs.

There may be a delay in release of funds for the construction of ISLs, but all the beneficiaries would certainly get the assistance from the government, he said, stating that district had received Rs 8 crore out of the total requirement of Rs 17 crore.

He directed the officials to ensure the construction of ISLs unhampered. Later, the MLA and the Collector distributed cheques to women groups for the construction of ISLs.

DRDA project director Arunasri, RWS EE Ramchander and other officials were present.
