Nizamabad: The Telangana Beedi and Cigar Workers Union has sought the Centre to exempt beedis from the GST (Goods and Services Tax), which stands at 28 per cent, as over seven lakh persons in Telangana are dependent on the industry.

In a release on Thursday, the union leaders said that the beedi industry is the second largest in the State after agriculture. Their votes are crucial for winning MLAs in 40 seats, they stated.

On one hand, both the State and the Central governments were inviting industrialists to set up their units and on the other hand, introducing measures like GST, which are troubling the local units.

The union district committee appealed for solidarity from all trade unions to ensure beedi industry is exempted from the GST.
