Hanamkonda: Mahatma Jyotirao Govindrao Phule is remembered as the champion, who worked against social evils such as untouchability and caste system, SDLCE (Kakatiya University) Director Ch Dinesh Kumar said.

Speaking at a programme organised as part of Jyotirao Phule’s 127th death anniversary here on Tuesday, Dinesh Kumar said that Phule was a strong advocate of women empowerment and education of girl child. “Phule extensively worked for the upliftment of down-trodden and eradication of untouchability,” he said.

Phule Ashaya Sadhana Samithi (PASS) founder-president Sangani Malleshwar said: “Phule, who strived for the equal rights for all, was unrelenting throughout his life.” He believed that social justice could only be possible with eradication of untouchability and caste system. This apart, he worked towards the causes of women, he said, pointing to Phule’s campaign against child marriages while supporting re-marriage of widows.

Later, Dinesh Kumar and Malleshwar distributed fruits and bread to the patients in the Government TB Hospital. Hospital superintendent Prof M Sravan Kumar, RMO Dr D Ravi, PASS state joint secretaries Sridharla Eashwar Kumar and Nallani Srinivas, and member Vangala Sudhakar were among others present.
