What is the difference between Molecular Biology and Microbiology? What are the career prospects of Molecular Biology? Does it fetch only a teaching job?
-Amtull Fatima, AWHO Ved Vihar.

Microbiology involves the study of microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc at their molecular level and on the other hand a molecular biologist studies the biological phenomena ie the structure and function of living systems at the molecular level, therefore some molecular biologists are also microbiologists but not all of them. There are many career opportunities for a person with a bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology other than only in the teaching field. Job market projections indicate that there will be high demand for Science and Engineering jobs in the future and a large fraction of these will be filled by molecular biologists.

Jobs in the field of Molecular Biology are mainly focused and research based jobs. Major employment areas are : Agricultural research services, botanical gardens, botanical survey, hospitals, horticulture, medical research, medical laboratories, wildlife and fishery departments, science centres, food institutes, schools, seed and nursery companies, etc. Aspirants in this field can also find promising jobs in many of the organisations abroad also. Some molecular biologists find fulfilling careers in non-traditional job sectors such as management, science policy, science writing, and medical illustration.
All the best!!!
