Anthropic Offers Researchers Up to $50,000 in AI Credits for Rare Disease Research

Anthropic is betting on AI to make a difference in rare disease research. It has launched a new program offering selected researchers up to $50,000 in credits for Claude AI to explore new treatments, analyse complex data, and accelerate scientific discoveries.

Anthropic takes pride in Claude’s capabilities—ranging from answering questions and writing code to functioning as an autonomous agent. Now, the company wants its AI model to help tackle a much greater challenge. It has announced a new initiative within its "AI for Science" program, offering selected researchers and early-stage biotech companies up to $50,000 in Claude AI credits over six months to help accelerate research into rare genetic diseases.
The funding is not provided as cash. Instead, selected applicants will receive Claude usage credits to access Anthropic’s AI models via its API. This will enable researchers to analyse scientific data, review medical literature, and build AI-powered research tools without worrying about computing costs.
Anthropic Aims to Accelerate Rare Disease Research with AI
Anthropic has put out its first formal call for proposals under AI for Science, the research initiative it launched last year. The idea behind the broader program is simple: get researchers working on similar problems talking to each other, sharing methods, and building on each other's work instead of everyone starting from scratch.
This particular round is focused on rare diseases—a field that's still surprisingly under-studied given how many people it affects. By Anthropic's count, roughly 400 million people worldwide are living with one of over 7,000 known rare diseases. Yet research in this space tends to stall for reasons that have nothing to do with scientific difficulty: patient populations are tiny, usable datasets are hard to come by, and what data does exist is often scattered across disconnected systems. That makes it hard for researchers to even establish how a disease progresses, let alone find something that might treat it.
Anthropic's bet is that AI can help chip away at these bottlenecks—sifting through huge volumes of biomedical literature, spotting connections between diseases that might otherwise go unnoticed, condensing research papers into something usable, and floating hypotheses that scientists can then go test on the bench.
How does the "AI for Science" program work?
Anthropic has divided the initiative into two tracks. The first track is aimed at scientists, physicians, and academic researchers studying the biology and underlying mechanisms of rare diseases. Anthropic notes that participants will collaborate with partners such as the Monarch Initiative, an international consortium focused on improving rare disease diagnosis and understanding the mechanisms behind these conditions.
Researchers will also have access to tools like DisMech, a disease classification library designed to help Claude analyse case reports, genetic databases, and medical literature to uncover similarities between seemingly unrelated rare diseases.
The second track is aimed at biotechnologists and early-stage biotech companies developing therapies for rare diseases.
According to the company, the process spanning from a confirmed genetic diagnosis to the availability of a treatment for patients can take between one and two years. However, it believes that its AI, Claude, could help shorten stages of this process by drafting regulatory documents, reviewing safety information, analysing the suitability of potential therapeutic targets, and assisting researchers in preparing applications for regulatory bodies.
How can researchers sign up?
Registration for both tracks is now open and will remain available until August 2, 2026, at 11:59 PM PST (August 3, 2026, at 12:29 PM IST). Selected candidates will receive Claude usage credits, valid for Claude Opus and other Anthropic models authorized for biological research. The company indicates that certain projects triggering its biosecurity systems could qualify for exemptions following a review.
