Gemini Makes History: Sundar Pichai Teases More Updates Before Pixel 11 Launch

Googles Gemini is really big now. It has over one billion people using it every month. This means Gemini is one of the used artificial intelligence assistants in the world just, like OpenAIs ChatGPT. Sundar Pichai talked about this on X. He showed us what Googles Gemini will be able to do soon before the new Pixel 11 comes out. Googles Gemini is getting better and better.

On X, Sundar Pichai stated that Gemini was the fastest Google product to achieve this feat. "Over a billion people now use the Gemini app every month to generate new ideas and get things done. It’s our fastest-growing product to date and the 14th to reach the billion-user mark," he wrote.

Pichai hinted that Google has more plans for Gemini. He added, "Thanks to everyone who has joined us on this journey—there’s much more to come!"

Notably, Google is expected to unveil new Gemini features alongside the launch of the Pixel 11 series on August 12 (early morning of August 13 in India). Rumours suggest that Gemini could integrate with the new "Pixel Glow" light located on the back of the Pixel 11 Pro models.

Gemini reached one billion users much faster than Gmail or YouTube

The Gemini app was made available to people in the beginning of 2024. So, it took the Gemini app two and a half years to get one billion people using it every month. If we look at YouTube, which's the biggest video platform right now it took YouTube, around eight years to get to that same number of people using it. The Gemini app is really popular and it is growing fast like the Gemini app did in a very short time the Gemini app got one billion monthly active users. Gmail took a long time to get going it was over ten years. The people who use Gemini are the ones who use the Gemini app, not the ones who use Google in ways. Even though a lot of people use the AI feature when they search on Google than one billion people every month the Gemini app is separate. When Google put Gemini into Google products like Android phones it helped more people start using it. Now most Android phones come with Gemini on them and they have things like Gemini Live and Circle, to Search.

In a blog post, Google detailed how users employ Gemini in their daily lives. The company reported that more than 63% of users interact with Gemini via voice, while one in five interactions with Gemini Live goes beyond voice to incorporate camera usage or screen sharing. Additionally, Gemini users were generating around 150 million images per day.

While Gemini has reached a significant milestone, Google faces growing pressure in the AI race from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Recently, the company has seen some of its most prominent figures—including Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat—leave the firm. Meanwhile, Demis Hassabis has also stepped back from the day-to-day management of Google DeepMind.

At the same time, Google has reportedly delayed the launch of Gemini 3.5 Pro because the model failed to meet internal targets set for tasks such as programming. Meanwhile, companies like Meta and xAI (Elon Musk's AI company) have launched new AI-powered programming tools.
