Jeevan Reddy slams preventive arrests ahead of CM’s visit
JAGTIAL: Former Minister and BRS State General Secretary T Jeevan Reddy criticised the preventive arrests of BRS leaders and activists in Jagtial district ahead of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s visit.
Addressing a press conference at Sarangapur mandal headquarters on Tuesday, Jeevan Reddy questioned the rationale behind detaining farmers and BRS activists. “If farmers are detained, who will ensure power supply to their agricultural fields?” he asked.
He alleged that the government was failing to provide adequate irrigation water, electricity and fertilisers to farmers at a crucial stage of the crop season. He said the government should take immediate steps to protect standing paddy crops and ensure irrigation facilities for the Rabi season.
Jeevan Reddy said large quantities of water from the Pranahita river were flowing downstream and alleged that the government was not making adequate efforts to utilise the available water resources. He suggested exploring the possibility of lifting water through the Annaram, Sundilla and Yellampalli system and filling the Sriramsagar Project to meet the irrigation needs of farmers.
He also demanded that the government examine the feasibility of utilising the Annaram and Sundilla barrages. Referring to reports on the Kaleshwaram project, he said the government should take steps to repair and utilise the structures wherever technically feasible.
The BRS leader alleged that the government was politicising irrigation projects instead of focusing on protecting farmers from drought-like conditions. He claimed that several irrigation reservoirs, including Mallanna Sagar, Ranganayaka Sagar and Kondapochamma Sagar, had been constructed during the previous BRS government as part of long-term water management.
Jeevan Reddy also criticised the government over the preventive detentions, alleging that they amounted to curtailing democratic rights. He said people should have the right to question the government and demanded the immediate release of those detained.
He further alleged that the State government was failing to address farmers’ concerns relating to irrigation, power supply and fertiliser availability. He urged the Chief Minister to rise above political differences and focus on the problems being faced by the farming community.
Referring to the alleged difficulties faced by farmers in Telangana, Jeevan Reddy said the government should announce effective measures to support them. He also criticised the reported decision to seek assistance from the Union government in dealing with issues related to the Kaleshwaram project.
The BRS leader alleged that the government’s actions were politically motivated and demanded that irrigation facilities be ensured for farmers before the Rabi season.
Former ZPTC member Kolumula Ramana, mandal president Thelu Raju, sarpanch Akula Ramesh and BRS leaders Konda Ramachandra Reddy, Kokka Ganganna, Konda Subba Reddy, Marripally Shekhar, Sambari Gangadhar and Madhukar were among those present.
