Thungaturthi bears brunt as tanks overflow

Nalgonda/Suryapet/Bhongir: Heavy rains triggered by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal lashed the erstwhile Nalgonda district continuously from Wednesday night, disrupting normal life and inundating low-lying areas.

Suryapet district witnessed widespread rainfall, while several mandals in Nalgonda and Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri districts were also affected.

Maddirala, Nuthankal, and Atmakur (S) recorded more than 8 cm rainfall, while Mothe, Munagala, Suryapet, and Mothkur received around 7 cm.

Nereducherla, Nadigudem, Aler, Nagaram, Shaligouraram, Kethepally, Jajireddygudem, and Huzurnagar recorded about 6 cm. Miryalaguda, Mellacheruvu, Chivvemla, Thirumalagiri, and Gundala received around 5 cm.

Thungaturthi mandal was among the worst-hit areas. The premises of the primary school at Karvirala were submerged in floodwater, making it difficult for students to enter the school.

Meanwhile, floodwater flowing over Chittaluri Bandham disrupted traffic between Keshavapuram and Velugupally villages. The overflowing Thoorpugudem tank also affected movement towards Thungaturthi via Ganugubanda. Several tanks in and around Thungaturthi were overflowing following heavy inflows; Tahsildar Dayanandam monitored the situation.

Meanwhile, Suryapet District Collector Tejas Nandalal Pawar declared a holiday for all schools in the district on Thursday, September 24, in view of the continuous rains and weather warnings.

The Collector said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure students’ safety. The holiday applies to government, local body, aided and private schools across the district.
