Hyderabad: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has bagged 82 per cent (445 of the total 538) of Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs) and a majority of Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTC) seats which have gone to polls in three phases during May.

The State Election Commission (SEC) declared that the ruling party bagged 445 of the 538 ZPTCs, including four unanimously elected ones, and won 3,557 out of 5,857 MPTCs of the State.

The Congress has won 75 ZPTCs and 1,377 MPTCs and is not in a position to clinch any one of the 32 Zilla Parishad chairperson posts and it may win few Mandal Parishad president posts only.

The Telugu Desam party (TDP) has won 21 MPTCs and could not win any of the ZPTCs. The BJP has won seven ZPTCs and 211 MPTCs. Both these parties have failed to get majority to win ZP chairperson or Mandal Parishad president posts like the Congress.

Independents and other parties have won 5 ZPTCs and 572 MPTCs. The independents and smaller parties may play key role in deciding the winner of the indirect polls to the Mandal Parishad president posts.

With the counting of votes and announcement of results, on Tuesday, the 42 days exercise of elections to the Mandal and Zilla Parishad has reached the penultimate stage.

The poll process would be concluded with the indirect election of ZP chairpersons and Mandal Parishad president posts on June 7 and 8.

The TRS won 60 per cent of the MPTCs. The Congress won 13 per cent of the ZPTCs and 23 per cent of the MPTCs. Independents and others won 0.9 ZPTCs and 9 per cent of the MPTCs.

The Telugu Desam has won 0.3 per cent of the MPTCs and the Bharatiya Janata Party has won 1.4 per cent of the ZPTCs and 3 per cent of the MPTCs.

The ballot papers have been eaten away by the termites in Bhupalpalli district and the officials of SEC are yet to take a decision on the issue. Barring this the counting process went on peacefully and successfully.

As many as 2.40 crore votes for MPTCs and ZPTCs have been counted in 978 halls in the 123 counting centres.

About 23,000 staff has counted the votes under the supervision of 11,800 supervisors. As many as 18,930 candidates have contested for the MPTC posts and 2,426 have contested for the ZPTC posts.
