Vijayawada: An international professional development programme for 29 State Best Teacher awardees from Andhra Pradesh began at the University of Turku in Finland as part of the state government’s education reforms. The programme is being conducted in three phases. The first phase comprised a four-day orientation programme in Vijayawada conducted by Finnish education experts. The second phase, underway from August 17 to 26, includes an eight-day immersive training programme in Turku and Rauma, featuring school visits, classroom observations and interactions with Finnish teachers and education professionals.

On the first day, the teachers received practical training on designing measurable classroom projects under the guidance of education expert Ari at Yläne Comprehensive School in Pöytyä, Finland. They also worked in teams to develop collaborative lesson plans. Under the guidance of Dr Julie, they explored ways to promote reading habits and language skills through stories, poems, picture books, drama and play-based activities.

The third phase will involve three online mentoring sessions by University of Turku professors to provide continuous guidance and feedback as teachers implement improvement projects in their schools.

Samagra Shiksha state project director (SPD) B Srinivasa Rao said the programme was aimed at exposing teachers to the best practices of Finland’s globally acclaimed education system, with emphasis on child-centred learning, play-based education and joyful pedagogy.

Srinivasa Rao said selected Finnish education practices would be adapted to the Andhra Pradesh context and implemented through demonstration classrooms. The trained teachers would also serve as master trainers and mentors at district and mandal levels, he said.

The initiative aims to strengthen foundational education while promoting creativity, critical thinking, reading habits and the physical and emotional well-being of children, he added.
