Early indications suggest that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fared well in West Bengal and Assam, while the Congress is gaining ground in both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, as counting for six by-elections in the four states was underway on Friday, October 9. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor turned politician Vijay, in Tamil Nadu had a tight election in which it was closely watched.

The bypolls will be held for five Assembly seats in West Bengal (Nandigram and Rejinagar), Tamil Nadu (Madurantakam and Dharapuram) and Puducherry (Thattanchavady) and one Lok Sabha seat in Assam (Nagaon).

The contests are being watched for what they could indicate about regional political alignments following recent Assembly elections and party switches. Early trends may change as counting progresses.

Tamil Nadu Bypolls: Test For Vijay’s TVK

Votes are being tallied in Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu that are being watched as a preliminary gauge of backing for Chief Minister Vijay and his Tamil Virna Koothu (TVK) party.

TVK secured 108 seats in Assembly election, which was short of 118 seats needed for a majority. So the bypolls have brought into focus whether Vijay's popularity will translate into goodwill for his party.

Both constituencies had been won by AIADMK candidates in the April Assembly election. The MLAs later switched to TVK, leading to the by-elections.

Early trends showed TVK ahead in Madurantakam, while AIADMK had taken the lead in Dharapuram in the initial rounds of counting. The contests are also important for the DMK, which is seeking to maintain its political position in the state.

West Bengal: BJP Leads In Nandigram And Rejinagar

Counting has been started for Nandigram in East Midnapore and Rejinagar in Murshidabad districts in West Bengal. The initial results indicated that the BJP was ahead in both seats.

Cautiously watching the bypolls as a result of the BJP ascendance to power in the state post Assembly poll of 2026 and the rifts within the Trinamool Congress.

In particular, Nandigram has garnered interest following the withdrawal of Trinamool Congress's candidate Sanchita Pradhan Dey from the race. Hasirani Rath of the BJP was supported by the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC faction after the withdrawal while Congressman Milan Pradhan was supported from Congress.

Hasirani Rath is the mother of Chandranath Rath, a former aide to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari who was killed in May.

The Rejinagar contest has also drawn attention amid political tensions involving rival parties and factions. Both constituencies have significant Muslim electorates, making the outcome important for the parties competing for support in the region.

Assam: Three-Way Contest In Nagaon

In Assam, the by-election to the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency is another closely watched contest. Early counting trends indicated that the BJP candidate was leading.

The bypoll became necessary after Congress veteran Pradyut Bordoloi left the party, joined the BJP and vacated the parliamentary seat after winning the Dispur Assembly constituency.

Former Nagaon deputy commissioner Debashish Sharma is the BJP candidate and former MLA Sibamoni Bora is the Congress candidate. AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal is also contesting, as he had lost the 2024 Lok Sabha polls from Dhubri.

The result could have implications for the political balance among the BJP, Congress and AIUDF in Assam.

Additionally, counting is also taking place in Thattanchavady in Puducherry. The seat fell vacant after Chief Minister N Rangasamy chose to retain the Mangalam constituency, where he had also won in the Assembly election.

In the early trends reported by the Election Commission, All India NR Congress candidate Ashok Anand was leading in Thattanchavady.

Results Could Shape Regional Political Equations

The six by-elections are being closely watched for their potential impact on regional party strategies and political alliances.

For Vijay’s TVK, the Tamil Nadu contests offer an early measure of its ability to retain seats won by legislators who later joined the party. The outcome is being monitored in West Bengal where BJP has become the ruling party and the TMC is facing split. However, Assam's Nagaon election leaves the BJP, Congress and AIUDF at a three-way tussle.

The trends remain provisional until counting is completed and the Election Commission declares the final results.
