Anantapur: Joint Collector Nishanth Kumar has described Mahatma Jyotiba Phule as a man vociferously fought against caste system and also strived for women empowerment. He also garlanded the statue of Phule.

Participating in the 130th death anniversary of the great social reformer here on Saturday, Nishanth said that Phule worked for a casteless society and for women's education.

He and his wife Savithri Phule saw to it that women of lower strata and lower middle class in the society got education. Phule himself started a school for girls in 1848 in Pune.

The couple also started a home for the widows and advocated universalisation of education. The couple did it at a time when women's education was a taboo in the society. Backward Classes Welfare Deputy Director Yugandhar and other officials were present.
