Vijayawada: Assistant Sub-inspector of Police K Manikyala Rao on Sunday saved the life of an Intermediate student by jumping into Krishna river from Penumudi bridge in Avanigadda mandal.

The incident took place when the ASI along with the constable Gopiraju was on duty near Penumudi bridge. The locals informed the police that an Intermediate girl jumped into river to commit suicide. Immediately, the ASI jumped into river and swam 500 metres to reach the drowning girl and saved her life.

The 58-year-old brave cop swam like a young man and brought the girl back to the shore. She was immediately shifted to Avanigadda Government Hospital. The girl was hurt and decided to commit suicide after her parents scolded her due to poor performance in the examinations.

The local fishermen and another constable Gopiraju also tried to rescue the girl. DGP D Gautam Sawang and Superintendent of Police M Ravindranath congratulated the senior cop for saving the life of girl.

Recently, a similar incident was taking place in Vijayawada where an ASI jumped into Bandar Canal in Krishna Lanka and saved a woman from drowning.
