Mumbai: Electric passenger vehicle retail sales nearly doubled in September to 36,108 units from 18,559 units in the corresponding month last year, even as the overall EV sales surged a whopping 74 per cent year-on-year to 3,33,364 units in the previous month, the Federation of Automobile Dealers’ Association (FADA) said on Wednesday.
Festive demand, maturing running-cost economics, a widening choice of models and sustained policy support through PM E-DRIVE and progressive state schemes are together turning the EV from an alternative into a default consideration for a growing set of buyers, FADA said.
The EV industry reported total sales of 191,497 units in September 2025.
“September delivered the highest-ever monthly EV retail. India has recorded 3,33,634 units across categories, up 74 per cent year-on-year, lifting overall EV penetration to about 13 per cent from 10 per cent a year ago,” FADA President Sai Giridhar said.
During the month under review, two-wheeler sales rose 88.67 per cent to 2,07,314 from 1,83,204, with Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor Company seeing 138.87 per cent and 125.87 per cent growth year-on-year.
In terms of market share, the two-wheeler segment recorded 11.6 per cent growth in September over 8.2 per cent in the same month last year, as per FADA.
“The record (sales) was led by the mass market, with electric two-wheelers touching a fresh all-time high of 2, 07,314 units, up 88 per cent year-on-year, taking their share to 11.6 per cent, Giridhar said.
