Heavy vehicles banned in Agumbe Ghat from June 15
In Short
Shivamogga DC bans heavy vehicles on Agumbe Ghat from June 15 to combat landslide risks this monsoon. Check the mandatory route diversions for the Tirthahalli-Udupi corridor to plan your travel safely.

Shivamogga: District Deputy Commissioner Prabhuling Kavalikatti has directed that heavy vehicles carrying gravel and goods will not be allowed on the Agumbe Ghat section of National Highway 169A from June 15 until the end of the monsoon season. The order requires all such vehicles travelling between Tirthahalli and Udupi to use designated alternative routes instead.
The decision follows a landslide that occurred on the Hulikal Ghat along the Shivamogga-Hosanagara-Mastikatte route connecting to Kundapura and Udupi. Temporary protective works are still underway at that location and remain incomplete.
As a result heavy traffic has shifted to the Agumbe Ghat stretch of the Tirthahalli-Malpe-Udupi road, raising concerns that continued heavy movement could trigger further landslides along the roadside, cause accidents, and create serious inconvenience for regular public movement. The DC also noted that any disruption to road connectivity towards Manipal, Udupi and Mangaluru would severely affect residents of Shivamogga, Davanagere, Chitradurga and Haveri districts who travel for health-related reasons. Such a situation would create major hardships for people across four districts, making the present order necessary to maintain safe and reliable access.
Heavy vehicles heading from Tirthahalli towards Udupi must now travel via Tirthahalli-Nagara-Nagodi-Kolluru-Kundapura-Udupi or via Tirthahalli-Shringeri-Kerekatte-Bajagoli-Karkala-Udupi. Vehicles moving in the opposite direction from Udupi towards Tirthahalli are required to use the routes Udupi-Kundapura-Kolluru-Nagodi-Nagara-Tirthahalli or Karkala-Bajagoli-Kerekatte-Sringeri-Tirthahalli. Authorities have issued the directive to ensure road safety and uninterrupted connectivity during the monsoon period.
