Good news for tipplers: No El Nino impact on beer production in TG
Here is good news for beer guzzlers. Beer production and supply will remain unaffected by the El Nino impact even as the water resources are depleting in the state due to rainfall deficit. According to sources, the Telangana government is making all arrangements to supply required water to breweries to produce beer to meet the growing demand amidst the prevailing heat conditions in the state.
The State Excise Department has sought a report from all breweries located in Sangareddy area on the requirement of water for beer manufacturing in the next three months in view of prevailing drought conditions.
The Singur dam and Manjeera project are providing required water for beer production to major global and domestic beverage companies, such as United Breweries Limited (Kingfisher) and Carlsberg, which operate large breweries. In view of deficit rainfall and depleting water reserves in the irrigation projects, the government is worried about shortage of water to breweries in the coming days.
In normal days, eight thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water is available in Singur, and other nearby projects and water is supplied to breweries from them to meet the daily requirement for beer produc-tion. Officials feel that it will be a big challenge to find alternatives to supply water to the breweries due to depleting water levels in Singur. One of the main alternatives is the utilization of water from Hydera-bad Water Board which has a strong water supply network in industrial areas around Hyderabad.
According to insiders from the beer segment, the available beer stocks will meet the requirements of the state till December end. If water supply is not adequate, the state will face a beer shortage from January. The Excise Department is expecting a huge beer shortage next summer if sufficient water is not available in the projects. The best option to overcome the crisis is to stockpile beer by utilizing available water sources till this year’s end.
