Kalki Bhagavan Dies At 77: Spiritual Leader And Founder Of Oneness Movement Passes Away In Chennai

Popular spiritual teacher Vijay Kumar Naidu, known as Kalki Bhagavan, succumbed to his illness on Tuesday while under treatment at a private hospital in Chennai. He was 77.

Kalki Bhagavan, the founder of Oneness organisation, became popular for his spiritual discourses, meditation courses and Oneness blessing (Deeksha). His movement gained followers in India and in a few countries.

From LIC Clerk To Spiritual Leader

Vijay Kumar Naidu was born on 7th March 1949 in Tamilnadu and studied at DG Vaishnav College, Chennai, before he joined the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), as a clerk.

He later left his job and turned towards spirituality. Over the years, he developed a following through teachings centred on meditation, consciousness and spiritual transformation before establishing the Oneness movement.

The organisation eventually expanded its activities beyond India and became associated with a large international following.

Oneness Centre Became Major Spiritual Destination

One of the movement's prominent centres was established at Varadaiahpalem in Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati district. The Ekam, or Oneness, campus became an important destination for followers attending spiritual programmes and meditation sessions.

The organisation was also associated with several social-service initiatives. These included drinking-water projects, healthcare programmes, eye-care camps and educational assistance in rural communities.

Kalki Bhagavan Faced Financial Controversies

Alongside his spiritual activities, Kalki Bhagavan and organisations linked to him were also involved in controversies over the years.

His operations came under scrutiny over allegations concerning commercialisation and land-related matters. A major financial controversy emerged in October 2019, when the Income Tax Department conducted searches at several premises associated with Kalki Bhagavan, his family members and businesses linked to them.

Tax officials reported recovering substantial amounts of cash, foreign currency and gold during the searches. Authorities also alleged that the searches revealed undisclosed income and overseas investments.

The allegations and tax-related proceedings generated considerable public attention at the time.

Kalki Bhagavan's Legacy

According to the sources, there were controversies about his organisation, however, Kalki Bhagavan was a prominent figure in India's contemporary spiritual landscape and even had followers in India as well as abroad.

It took him nearly 40 years to go from an L.C.L. clerk to the founder of an international spiritual movement. The Oneness organisation integrated meditation, consciousness teachings with mass programmes and social works.

His death at the age of 77 marks the end of the life of a spiritual leader whose work attracted a substantial following while also drawing public scrutiny over the scale and functioning of his organisation.
