Chittoor: District Collector Sumit Kumar said engineers and architects have a key role in the development of the country and urged them to focus on quality, technology and efficient designs in their work.

He was speaking at a programme organised by the Chittoor District Architects and Civil Engineers Association in Chittoor on Tuesday to mark Engineer’s Day and the 165th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. He paid floral tributes to the statue of Visvesvaraya on the occasion.

The Collector said remembering Visvesvaraya, who played a major role in the development of engineering in India, was inspiring for engineers.

Engineers and architects from different fields had been contributing to nation-building through infrastructure and development projects. Several dams, roads, irrigation systems and town-planning projects built in the past continued to demonstrate their quality even today. Engineers should keep pace with changing technology and work towards new innovations and quality construction, he said.

Chittoor MLA G Jagan Mohan said the services rendered by Visvesvaraya to the country would always be remembered. He said the Tirumala ghat road and several projects and dams in the Mysore region stood as examples of Visvesvaraya’s engineering skills.

Engineers should prepare accurate estimates and efficient designs to ensure that public money was not wasted. CHUDA Chairperson K Hemalatha, R&B SE B Suresh, National Highways official Srinivas, and others attended the programme.
