Hyderabad: Open plots in several residential areas of Hyderabad are increasingly turning into garbage dumping yards, raising serious health and safety concerns for residents. These vacant plots, despite being located amid houses and apartment complexes, are being used to dump household waste, old furniture, construction debris, and other forms of waste.

Residents have urged the Municipal Corporations and concerned plot owners to take immediate action. Going by the woes of residents, the problem is particularly grave in various colonies of Tolichowki, Shaikpet, Kondapur, Miyapur, Nizampet, Bachupally, Manikonda, Kukatpally, Safilguda, Sainikpuri, Uppal, LB Nagar, and Malakpet, among others, where vacant plots have become convenient dumping spots for people from surrounding neighbourhoods.

The waste in the open ground is not only an eyesore but has also become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects, apart from emanating foul smell. Moreover, heavy vegetation has also grown in several plots, providing shelter for stray dogs and pests.

Asif Hussain, a resident of Shaikpet, said: “People are dumping everything here—from household garbage and old furniture, mattresses to scrap and construction waste. An open plot has effectively become a garbage yard in a residential area in Surya Nagar Colony, Shaikpet.”

Residents fear that the unchecked dumping could pose serious health hazards, particularly to children and elderly people living nearby. “The garbage attracts mosquitoes and stray dogs, while the thick vegetation makes the entire area look neglected. We are worried about the health and safety of families living around these plots,” said Narsing Prasad, a resident of Nizampet.

The issue has also triggered frustration among residents over who should be responsible for keeping such vacant plots clean. While residents expect the civic authorities to act against illegal dumping and clear accumulated waste, they also believe plot owners must maintain their properties and prevent them from becoming dumping grounds. On social media, residents have been highlighting the issue and questioning the accountability of both the civic authorities and plot owners. On ‘X’, a resident of Safilguda, H Manjula, posted a video of people dumping garbage in an open plot “Pathetic civic sense! Open plots in residential colonies turning into garbage dumping grounds. Who is accountable—the GHMC or the plot owners? This needs urgent attention.”

She said: “The civic authorities and plot owners cannot keep passing the responsibility to each other. There has to be a clear mechanism to prevent dumping, clear the waste, and maintain these plots.”

Residents have urged the tri-municipal corporations – GHMC, CMC, MMC and concerned plot owners to take immediate action, clear the accumulated garbage as well as vegetation, and put measures in place to prevent repeated dumping.
